How the energy company Vattenfall started a climate movement
We can see that skiing is affected by a warmer climate, but that skiing itself is one of the sports that has the greatest impact on the climate may not be as well known. That is why Vattenfall works together with the Swedish national alpine team for the future of skiing and a better climate by activating ski clubs across the country.
Vattenfall has for many years been a Smart Energy Partner to the Swedish Ski Team with the goal of halving their carbon dioxide emissions. In relation to the growing climate interest among children around the word, 2019 was the year to apply the sport's climate-thinking at grassroots level. Therefore, Klimatbacken was developed. which in swedish means both "The climate support" and "the climate hill"
Klimatbacken is a collaboration between the Swedish Ski Association and Vattenfall and is carried out by ski clubs to raise money for the club and an optional climate project. The project was developed in the fall of 2019 as a pilot to test interest and its ability to function for both additional sales of Vattenfall's services and as a community development concept.
So how does it work?
Members of the club start of by searching for local sponsors, which could be stores, family members and friends. Later on, the whole club gathers to do 30 minutes of up-hill running to collect money from their sponsors. The total sum of money coming in from sponsors is based on contributions per vertical meter run by participants. 20% of the total sum is doubled by Vattenfall.
A branding kit for each club
To each participating club a kit containing everything needed to arrange their own Klimatbacke was sent. The kit included, among other things: posters, track markings, goal arch, sponsor messages and each one their own snapchat filter.
Klimatbacken also entered into a collaboration with climate coach Lasse Ejeklint, a well-known face who has been seen in many TV shows where he conveyed hundreds of smart energy tips to the people. Together with Vattenfall, he produced Klimatbacken's own guide on how Sweden's clubs all over the country can take their own initiatives for a climate-smart business.
The future of Klimatbacken
Klimatbacken is about highlighting the environmental issues in the sector while giving the clubs a chance to obtain resources to create environmentally friendly skii hills and ensure that the sport has the conditions to continue to be practiced by future generations.
Following the success of the pilot project, Klimatbacken will go out with more sponsors in 2020 and a target of at least 50 participating clubs with their own climate projects.
